Ginawa niya ito for The Electric Company noong taong 1971, bago niya ilabas ang kanyang unang children's book, Anansi The Spider. Noong una mong napanuod ito, naniwala ka na nakakatakot ang pelikula na pinapanuod ni Freddy. Mas lalo kang natakot nung napansin mo na puro mga mamaw ang mga katabi ni Freddy sa movie theater! He thought that Cubao needed an image shift. He was right! The problem with Cubao was...well, Cubao was in Cubao and not Makati or Greenhills where all the "smart" crowd went. Or so the theory went. Here was a chance to get wild and wild I got - in many ways!

Well, the ONLY way to get people to see Cubao in a different light was to do something way out of the ordinary - so I bought a 1957 Cadillac convertible and painted it bright pink. A good start. Then I crashed it into the plate glass window next to the entrance. The concept was Roller Disco. The lights, the music and Bose speakers with a hell thumping bass that made your hair stand on end...none of that anemic Muzak and neon strip lighting of normal roller rinks where glazed matrons watched with horror while their siblings crashed to the floor in convoluted heaps. This was meant to be SERIOUS. It had to be because to some extent roller skating under a raft of screaming lights to loud disco music in semi darkness produces an effect not guaranteed to be the best recipe for safety! I mean it was all very well luring the crazies from Makati to go all the way to Cubao (like it was the NORTH POLE in those days) but put them on skates to Donna Summer and you've got a serious potential problem. And that was only the start. I remember well nearly dragging one of the disc jockey out of the booth since the atmosphere inside the booth had become rather enveloped in a haze of marijuana fumes. Fun perhaps but dangerous. Dangerous.

This is an original invitation to the opening of SKATETOWN which opened in the early 80's. It was my project with Jorge Araneta.

The space up on the third floor of Ali Mall was cavernous and screaming for development and apart from an actually extremely good Italian restaurant where I once had lunch with Paul Anka, (who had the great misfortune to compose the favorite song of all bad singers in karaoke bars in the world: My Way) the rest of the floor was one great space waiting to happen.

Electro Systems were brought into create the lights and install a high-tech sound system and we worked, therefore, from the top down; working on the ceiling first since it was this cacophony of coordinated lights that would hopefully not disorientate the skaters too much that would create the mood for Skatetown. The DJ booth jutted out into the rink so that the disc jockey could see what was happening (unless he was stoned out of his mind) and was clad in mirrored sheets as was, in fact, quite a lot of the sidings. The original rink was painted with clouds but with the thousands of skaters that besieged the place they quickly faded into obscurity. Silver padded edging surrounded the rink itself and that lasted about a month only since bewildered skaters zoomed, temporarily blinded perhaps, into the sides at speed = shredding everything in their path! They were replaced with industrial strength vivid pink vinyl and the problem was solved.

At the far end of SKATETOWN there was, somewhat incongruously, a real Australian outback saloon that Jorge Araneta had purchased complete in Australia and had shipped over to Manila. It was as far away from a disco as you could imagine but it worked. Crazy was what was needed and crazy we got. Bit too crazy. The Araneta management decided that we needed to have periods every hour when the lights (the neon srip lights I hated) were turned on and the sound turned down so that more normal people who just liked skating could enjoy themselves without risk of brain damage or a broken arm or leg! It became the headquarters of an important skating club and these were serious skaters! They wore uniforms and not like the scarlet red one piece, zip up coveralls that I designed for the Skatetown staff either. It was a culture clash: me wanting wild and then wanting wholesome. But all in all - it worked!

The opening actually did attract the glitterati, I mean there really was, for all to see, Chinbee Monotoc, all the way from Makati in her Saint Laurent gliding across the rink hemmed in by A Listers from the "better" areas. They had made it to Cubao without getting mugged! Ernest Santiago of the famed Coco Banana arranged a show on skates and anyone who remembers Coco Banana will have an idea of how it was - outrageous comes to mind. So it was a great success and I wanted it to spread. I wanted to do the whole top floor as a sort of crazy, young vibrant place that would have all linked in together like cool Lego but it was too advanced a concept for that period. But Skatetown remains a great memory for many people. It was a spark. It ROCKED.

Previously: Chapter 6 - Basketball Fever & Nicholas Stoodley Photos

Start from the beginning! Voyagers was a TV series about Phineas Bogg (Jon-Erik Hexum), a member of a society of time travelers called Voyagers. Phineas Bogg would go on time travel adventures with the aid of a young boy named Jeffrey Jones (Meeno Peluce). Time travel was made possible by using a device called an Omni, and the two adventurers would travel back in time to help history unfolded as we know it. Many historical figures appeared in this series, among them Babe Ruth, Cleopatra, Thomas Edison, Benjamin Franklin, and Harriet Tubman. First developed and written by Edward packard.

THE RACE FOREVER
Author: R.A. Similar in style to Hanna-Barbera's successful Scooby-Doo, Where Are You!, Speed Buggy followed the adventures of an anthropomorphic dune buggy, Speed Buggy (voiced by Mel Blanc), his driver Tinker (voiced by Phil Luther, Jr.), and Tinker's friends Mark and Debbie (voiced by Michael Bell and Janet Waldo, respectively). The three young adults and their car traveled from race to race, often encountering spy capers and mysteries along the way. Our pretend "program-programan" has now graduated into the live TV format. For starters, we have claimed one floor area of the master bedroom as our stage, designated the tall, stand-up fan as the TV camera, and gathered all the hairbrushes we could find to use as our microphones. The bed was perfect as risers and so I directed my two younger siblings to sit back and act as members of the audience.

In Nora Aunor's "Superstar", she always opened the show with a song or two. If I remember right, the songs were mostly standards very popular with the lolos and lolas; as in "Send In The Clowns" and "Those Were The Days" (You know this one, it goes like this, "Those were the days, my friend. We thought they'd never end. We'd sing and dance forever and a day...lalalalala...lalalala...) The audience would be seen clapping along. We agreed that Jepoy and Mabel would do the same. But first, of course, it was time to start the show.

"Ladies and Gentlemen, the first part of our program is a song number from..." I gave the microphone/hairbrush to our "guest" (another sibling) and she proceeded to sing...what? "You Light Up My Life". I had to run fast and disappear behind the camera. I have to man the camera and shoot her every move. I had a hard time doing that because peeking from behind a "camera" with spinning blades and an oscillating head gave me a choppy view of the performer. I also had to be careful not to get my fingers actually get caught up in the mechanism for fear of a much bloody situation. How hard it is to be the Director and stand-in Cameraman; plus be the Emcee. This really proves that producing a TV show is really complicated. Everything was impromptu. You get to learn the title of your guest's song at the last minute. Worst, the talent can not even complete her performance. Midway through her act, she decided she did not know all the lyrics and dared walk out with out even a curtsy. "Bow!" I had to remind her; and to my audience, "Applause! Palakpak kayo d'yan!". I should have known that time that placards were used for prompters. But anyway, this audience won't be able to read them so that's a useless idea.

We needed another guest so one of the "audience" was yanked away from his comfy seat so he could pretend to be the next guest. "The second part of our program is a dance number from..." Jepoy didn't move an inch. He just gave a cute grin but never budged. (Quality talents are so hard to find!) He was pushed back to the bedside, er, risers as I wrapped my head with one of the flat sheets. "Just pretend I'm a woman with long hair." I got hold of one of the mics and gave my best version of "Mc Arthur Park".

"Mac Arthur Park was melting in the dark... I don't think that I can make it coz it took so long to bake it and I'll never have that recipe again. Oh nooooo...!"

"Kakain na!" Someone hollered from downstairs and we scrambled to get ready for dinner. The TV studio turned back into a bedroom, a very messy bedroom of pillows, blankets, and hairbrushes scattered on the floor. We did not even pause to pick up the items because Lola told us never ever keep food waiting on the table or God will take away His blessings and we will end up hungry forever.

More Random Recall Machine: Nag-Plano Ang Mga Chickboy

Technorati Tags:70s, 80s, memories, nostalgia

fjtrfjfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00806955731428517452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874284943292190682.post-25132753406938559792007-03-20T22:29:00.000-07:002013-12-17T22:34:19.429-08:00Nostalgia Bloggista: Gigi Santos-CastanedaAre you a Pinoy Blogger? Where did you grow up, and what made that place special?
Home for me was in Makati. My dad, a landscape architect, did several projects for the Ayala Corporation in Makati starting way back in the '60s so in exchange he was able to get a plot of land in our village for a pretty good price, I think. It was my whole world -- there was South Supermarket where I'd go buy my books and snacks, Magallanes Theater where I watched all my first movies, and the first Pancake House, where the walls were plastered with classic movie posters. I even remember there was a Kentucky Fried Chicken for a very short while, which oddly enough was a sit-down restaurant and seemed to be on the fancier side. Anyway it seemed like everything I needed was just a walk away and I always felt safe. My first friends were my neighbors, and all our homes were open to each other. Definitely a very idyllic time and place to grow up in.

2. What was your favorite tv show, cartoon, or children's show growing up? What did you like about these shows that made them your favorite?
I was weaned on "Sesame Street" like most other kids my age. Even today, when I say a letter or number I have an image of how I learned it from the show. I remember starting off my mornings watching "My Favorite Martian" and "Get Smart" -- I loved both so much I could watch reruns over and over (because that's what they mostly were). Then at night I'd watch "The Carol Burnett Show" and "The Wild, Wild West" with my parents in their room. One of my favorite cartoons was "Wait 'Til Your Father Gets Home" -- although when I think of it now, it really wasn't made for little kids because of the themes it delved into. But I also liked the "Flintstones" and all its offshoots, "Wacky Races," and "SuperFriends." It was a good time to be a kid in the '70s because the shows were so wholesome back then -- for example "Little House on the Prairie" taught me what it meant to be a good person. I mean, even "The Love Boat" and "Charlie's Angels" were relatively innocent, compared to shows now. And of course I watched all the popular Filipino variety and comedy shows; "John En Marsha" used to make me laugh so hard my stomach hurt.

3. Favorite music group or artist? Most memorable song?
I grew up with the radio attached to my ear so I have so many favorites, I couldn't possibly pick one or even a couple. I'm so thankful for "Jingle Magazine" because it taught me all the lyrics to my favorite songs. My earliest favorites were Bread, the Carpenters, Carole King, Carly Simon, James Taylor, The Fifth Dimension, Stylistics, America, even Todd Rundgren... I could really go on and on. I still know the words to all the songs I used to sing along to. I forget a lot of things these days but not the music I used to love. The '80s was a fun decade for music, but somehow it's the '70s stuff that's deep in my soul.

4. Share with our readers one of your fondest memories of growing up.
On some Sundays my dad would bring me with him to Nayong Pilipino, where he had a small tract of land he used as his nursery. Buried deep in the middle of the property was a little shack surrounded by a stream of mudfish and a wall of tall trees. I'd sit inside reading, listening to the radio and basically just putzing around all morning while dad tended to his plants. Once in a while he'd take us to that Maranao-style restaurant where I'd always order champorado and tapa. Until today, it's still the standard to which I measure all breakfasts. Sarap talaga!

5. What do you miss from back then that's not available today?
Space. Makati is so crowded and congested now, it's really become an urban jungle. If there's a postage-stamp-sized piece of land available, something is built on top of it right away. But the funny thing is I really do miss South Supermarket -- especially one of the guys who used to work there whom we called "Kulot" (I think his real name was Louie), who never seemed to age I swear. Before the place closed down and was replaced by a small Rustan's grocery store, I was lucky enough to visit home and say goodbye to this place I knew all my life, and I got to tell Kulot I'd miss him even if I left home more than 20 years ago. I found out that day that he was able to send all his children to college by working at the supermarket all those years. That really made me happy, such a great story to end my memories of an era. But I was also a bit sad because I realized that almost everything I remember about home and growing up was gone now.

More Nostalgia Bloggista: Maryanne Moll

Technorati Tags:70s, 80s, blog, nostalgia

fjtrfjfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00806955731428517452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874284943292190682.post-15013035885111902912007-03-20T22:20:00.000-07:002013-12-17T22:34:19.482-08:00Nostalgia List #25"Someday my prince will come!"
Nostalgia Lists contain various fun memories of the '60s, '70s and '80s. Comments na! Many thanks to ranmamaru for uploading this video!

Technorati Tags:70s, 80s, bmx, nostalgia

fjtrfjfhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00806955731428517452noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2874284943292190682.post-43731235986391702592007-03-20T07:45:00.000-07:002013-12-17T22:34:19.643-08:00Seeing Stars: Pilipino Reporter Magasin 1971 Vilma Santos Edgar Mortiz Jay Ilagan Cocoy LaurelSeeing Stars is made possible through the kindness of our good friend Edward De Los Santos.
